Pre-seeded biotextile: laying an irrigation channel

An application case in the province of Padua

We are observing the installation of an irrigation channel for which, once the profiling, lining and covering operations had been carried out, erosion protection and greening of the surface was provided by means of the pre-seeded biotextile Viresco® Sator .

Once the restoration excavation had been carried out, the surface was covered with a geotextile with separation and reinforcement fabric, a waterproofing geomembrane and a reinforced three-dimensional erosion control geomembrane.

On top of these materials, approx. 20 cm of moderately loam topsoil was spread, levelled off, and finally the Viresco® Sator pre-seeded biotextilewas laid.

In fact, such extensive work, divided into various work phases and types of materials, can be compromised if the surface is exposed to weather and flooding elements or water flows without any protection.

It is now well established that bank revegetation is the most effective method to give good and lasting protection to the watercourse with both technical-hydraulic and environmental implications.

A grassed bank with vegetation increases the channel’s roughness index and offers excellent resistance to the flow of water, slowing down the speed of the current, providing protection to the surface as well as favouring biodiversity and the establishment of ecological channels that involve the habitat from a floristic and faunal point of view, performing, in addition, a phytodepurative function with improved water quality.

Virens applications

For this purpose, the pre-seeded biotextile Viresco® Sator is particularly suitable because it protects the seeds required for grassing and provides immediate surface protection. It can be fixed to the ground by means of iron staples, wooden stakes or biodegradable plastic stakes. As can be observed, it guarantees excellent grassing results with very little post-laying assistance.

In this case, no emergency irrigation was involved, and despite the fact that the season proceeded with mainly sporadic rainfall concentrated in a short period of time, the greening process nevertheless continued, erosion control was maintained and integration with the surrounding floral context was fully achieved.

Even maintenance, once the vegetation has completely established itself with virtuous morphological and naturalistic dynamics, can and must be minimal specifically to preserve the ecological habitat that has been established, while respecting the necessary flow requirements at all times.

Viresco® Sator is an easy and cost-effective solution for effective results and the establishment of beneficial ecological processes.
