The role of pre-seeded fabric in pest and pathogen defence

Parsley, a delicate crop

Parsley is a very delicate crop that suffers from both high temperatures and low temperatures.

It also requires a constant amount of moisture to germinate, but suffers from water stagnation. For this reason, it is important to prepare the soil well so that it drains well. To limit thermal shocks to the seed, it may be useful to protect it with TNT during the germination phase, especially in cold weather, taking care to remove the protection when the cotyledons first appear.

It should always be remembered that parsley has a considerable germination time (around 20 days), which is particularly variable depending on environmental conditions. This is why it is important to choose sowing periods that are not close to climatic phases with possible temperature extremes, otherwise there is a risk of having to deal with these difficulties with a young plant that is still very delicate.

Viresco® Olus and the cultivation of parsley

The slow germination makes this plant particularly vulnerable in the period to weeds, so not only is: Viresco® Olus highly valued precisely because of the protection it offers against both spontaneous vegetation and pests and pathogens, especially in the initial phase and in the event of temperature rises.

Organic farming, having fewer means of defence against these adversities, also benefits from Viresco® Olus because it allows soils to be operated more efficiently and economically, particularly in the case of protected crops. Idle periods for carrying out false sowing and solarisation, flame weeding or steam sterilisation are avoided, saving energy resources, often fossil-based, and better preserving soil properties.

This is not to mention care, such as frequent weeding, which can be avoided or greatly reduced during the cultivation cycle.

Although sowing can be done either in spring or autumn, professionals in the sector consider the period immediately after summer to be more suitable, since the plant always goes to seed in spring, thus allowing for more cutting during the year.

The parsley yield with Viresco® Olus is very good, naturally more so when sown in scatter plots and less so when sown in rows, although larger plants can still be grown in rows.

Virens applications

In the experience documented here, one can clearly see parsley trials sown with the pre-seeded biofabric Viresco® Olus in both white and black (of totally natural origin) for the colder seasons.

In this autumn sowing example, we can observe both row and scatter planting and see the germination and growth phases and the final result.

At the end of the cycle, the crop was particularly dense with a very satisfactory yield and at the same time a product that was of excellent quality, and both healthy and clean.
