A grassing intervention on slopes

The case in an aloe nursery in Calabria

In this situation, erosion protection and the grassing of banks of land surrounding a nursery in Calabria were addressed.
The ground was bare, exposed to possible surface runoff and erosion, and therefore needed a quick and easy intervention.

Virens applications

Since the soil was skeletal, friable, in a delicate location, and in need of reliable ground security, it was decided to opt for Virmat L, our lightweight version of the three-dimensional reinforced pre-seeded geomat.
Virmat L weighs approximately 400 g/m2 and adheres easily to the ground, therefore the laying process went smoothly.
It has a multilayer structure (three layers) that guarantees greater strength than geomats produced by intertwining the strands.
This is thanks to three geogrids, two of which are flat on the outside and a central, densely pleated one, which limit the deformability of the product and allow for greater retention capacity in the event of a blockage with soil.
The structure of VIRMAT L exerts 6-7 times more tensile strength than other geomats of the same thickness.

Within about ten days it was already possible to see the first blades of grass and in about a month the grassing was practically complete.
Since this was in an area in the far south of the country, a seed mix had to be decided upon that could withstand both the strong summer heat and the low winter temperatures, and in this respect the speciality of Virens is the studied customisation of the compositions.

The required landscape restrictions were amply fulfilled and the result could also be seen from an aesthetic point of view.
